Advent Calendar Tutorial
Posted in Holiday Embroidery TutorialsTutorials

These fun Emoji Ornaments can be made so easily for fun teacher gifts, friends gifts or to decorate your tree in a unique way this year!

This tutorial includes instructions for how to make these mini felt Emoji ornaments.  Instructions are included in separate tutorials for how to make the felt numbered pockets as well as how to assemble the advent calendar.

Supplies Needed for each Emoji ornament:

  • Firm cutaway stabilizer
  • Yellow felt- Two pieces 3” x 3” (8 cm x 8 cm)
  • Red felt scrap
  • White felt scrap
  • Grosgrain ribbon or Twine- 5” (12.7 cm) long piece for each emoji

Expert Tip: I never recommend using a satin type ribbon for this type of project because it will be more likely to fray and tear over time.  Grosgrain ribbon is a woven type material, so it is much sturdier.

A note about thread colors:  Though the design file may have multiple unusual colors, you may use any thread colors that you’d like to match your project.  The variety of thread colors is used to separate out design steps only.  You will use mostly white and black thread for the majority of these ornaments.

Be sure to read all instructions before beginning

Instructions:

Hoop one piece of tearaway or cutaway stabilizer.

Color 1:  Placement stitch.  Sew onto the stabilizer.

Color 2:  Placement stitch for ribbon.  Sew onto the stabilizer.  This step is a rectangle with a center line.  This center line is where you will line up your ribbon.

Take your ribbon or twine and tape it above and below the rectangle.  Add piece of tape above the top of the design as well to keep the ribbon secure.

Color 3:  Rectangle tackdown for bottom piece of ribbon.

Color 4:  Tackdown for top piece of ribbon.  This short stitch along the top helps keep the ribbon from shifting during the rest of the design process.

Trim excess ribbon/twine from below the rectangle box.  Remove any tape from inside the design area.  Leave the tape holding the ribbon above the design so it doesn’t fall down into the design.

Lay a piece of yellow felt over the design and pin or tape it to the stabilizer.

Color 5-?:   Stitch all design details.  Keep stitching the steps until you have gotten to the hat placement stitch.

Lay a piece of red felt down over the placement stitch.

Stitch the tackdown around the hat and trim the lower part of the hat piece.

Stitch the placement stitches for the brim and the hat pom.

Lay a piece of white felt over the top of the design and then sew the tackdown stitches.

Trim around entire outside of brim and along inside of the hat pom.

Stitch the satin stitches around the brim of the hat and the interior piece of the pom.

Remove the hoop from the machine but do not unhoop the project.  Turn the hoop over and tape or pin a piece of yellow felt to the back, covering the entire design.

Return hoop to the machine and stitch the final step which is the outline of the  entire design.

Remove design from hoop and trim around the edges as shown.

To prevent accidentally cutting the ribbon off, first fold and hold the ribbon and stabilizer to the back and out of the way, and trim the front yellow felt piece.

Next, fold the ribbon to the front and trim the stabilizer and the back yellow felt piece.

You are finished!  Now you can make all 25 of these Emoji mini ornaments for your Advent calendar!

Expert tip:  To make your felt ornaments have a nice clean edge, and be more durable, heat seal the edges.  To do this you will light a candle and slowly rotate the edge of the felt ornament through the heat.  The heat melts all the felt fringe, and gives the edges a slightly firm feel.  Make sure you hold the ribbon out of the way so it doesn’t burn!  I have made two short videos to show you how I do this:

Heat Sealing Edges Method 1
